Sorry to take so long to reply...although retired, I am very busy and only rarely check the old forum threads.
I have only a single paid piece of fiction, which happened to be my first (bad omen) and that was published in Pyramid Magazine. But I know an author, Chris Nuttall, who has many published (I have them all). He posts chapter by chapter on a web forum (the sub-forum is available only to members) and gets criticisms, then polishes his work and publishes it on Kindle. You could try that. The three forums I know that do this are:
http://www.rhjunior.com/Forum/index.php (main forum focuses on the owner's web comics, but you can post your stories there.
Very conservative owner and readership)
http://www.alternatehistory.com/Discussion/ (Very liberal. Chris got banned for his conservative views).
http://www.counter-factual.net/upload/ (Chris' current forum)
I am sure there are others.

I'm still writing, though I have no plans for publication in the immediate future. I've actually got an account on alternatehistory.com and I've seen the political bent of the website. Many dissenting voices are simply shot down and called names. I just give my input on actual stories and avoid any of the political topics.

Currently, I have several ideas in the planning phases, including a hypothetical clash of civilizations world war that this site is predicting.

Trevor --- For your "clash of civilizations" you may want to read some "alternative" literature for some "interesting" insights. Some of the "old" literature appears to be coming to pass.

Oh, I should warn you, that is a dangerous rabbit hole to go down, it can take you into the "strangest" of places.

cheers
