Re: 17-Jan-13 World View -- Mali conflict explodes

The militants work very hard at infiltrating security forces. This is one of their primary goals in every country. Don't make the mistake of confusing the attitudes held by "security" groups as typical of government or military services in the region. In a number of countries they'd do better with n...

Re: Financial topics

There are certainly worse places to put money than Vanguard. Risk is simply hard to quantify now, that coupled with uncertainty makes many people very risk averse. The major risk now simply lies in the fact that nobody inside the US is in control of the real risks to the US economy, because all the ...

Re: Financial topics

Seems likely to me they'll balance to within +- 1%. But it has to wait till the end of the fiscal year to answer that. Re: Financial topics

Looks like Bernake hasn't changed much with age. LOL.

The problem of what to do with people on the left side of the bell curve is one of the great social problems of our time. The other is much older, what to do about the natural result of compound interest.

Re: Financial topics

Apple has been dropping, and given that Android has simply passed up the Apple OS is unlikely to recover. Apple has been propping up the market as has been noted here multiple times, will they drag the entire market down with them as they drop? It seems very possible to me. I haven't seen much from ...

Re: Financial topics

Apple products are showing weakness compared to Android devices - and now the tech press is taking notice. That Android is now 75% of the smartphone market worldwide can no longer be ignored in Apple stock prices. Apple has driven the market up, so will Apple now drive the market down? http://news.c...

Re: 12-Jan-13 WV-France sends army and air force into Mali

Afghanistan as a state is totally dysfunctional. They'll last as long as NATO or the US props them up, then they'll fall to whoever. Part of this is very probably simply being weary of the Pakistan mess, there's no resolution for that one either, as witness the bitter article by Khan yesterday. I su...

Re: Financial topics

I've noted a certain shift in thinking recently, items that would have driven the market up a few years ago are now having no effect or actually pushing it down. Since US political movement follows the DJIA much more closely than it does the actual economy, a serious (15-20%) drop in the DOW would c...

RBS to cut bonuses. I suppose they'll all threaten to quit and go somewhere that hasn't got caught yet. http://www.foxbusiness.com/news/2013/01/11/rbs-to-slash-bonuses-to-pay-libor-fines-source/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+foxbusiness%2Feconomy+%28Internal+-+Economy+-+...
