Re: Generational Dynamics World View News

Putin doesn't have to take the entire Ukraine to achieve his goals. He can start by officially seizing the areas where insurgents and Russian contractors are already fighting: Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Luhansk. They'd likely fall in a couple weeks, given that Ukraine has Soviet-era equipment while Russi...

Re: Generational Dynamics World View News

I don't think Putin can afford to back down. If he does, he's going to look weak back home. Even if we did make some form of agreement to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO, I doubt it'll matter. At most, it might postpone invasion for a year or two, allowing him to ensure Europe wouldn't do anything...

Re: Generational Dynamics World View News

Russia also helped build the military Hitler turned on them. They sold them enormous amounts of raw materials, chiefly oil, that would have crippled Germany had these shipments not been made. One of the reasons Germany was dominant early in the war was Soviet support. Had it just been a non-aggressi...

Re: Wargaming a conflict

I'm not sure how strong the Russian military really is. During the Cold War, a lot of their strength existed only on paper, with many of their tanks and aircraft either junk or poorly maintained. Russia lost more soldiers fighting in Chechnya than we did in Iraq and Afghanistan, over a shorter perio...

Wargaming a conflict

For the purposes of this post, I'm leaving nuclear weapons out of the equation, focusing on conventional forces alone for an invasion of Taiwan. Both sides face one major problem: they don't have either the manpower or the equipment for a sustained conflict. China's air force production rate, as thi...

Re: Societal collapse

The short term has a way of making the long-term obsolete. Time may not be on China's side the way it might appear. They're only beginning to find out how badly they've screwed themselves with their one-child policy. They might have ended it, but the damage is done. China's got one of the fastest ag...

Re: Generational Dynamics World View News

The question is: when China takes Taiwan, do they calculate that the United States won't get involved, or decide that it's going to be war with us either way, and it's best to hit first. A lot of people are looking at Biden, and how badly things have fallen apart just in the last year. The disaster ...

Re: Generational Dynamics World View News

What's really pathetic is all these people saying: "We need to ignore China's genocide so we can get their cooperation on climate change." As if you'll get more than lip service out of them, anyway. We promise to reduce emissions immediately; they make a vague statement that theirs will peak in a de...

Re: Nuclear War

Something to keep in mind with these tests is, aircraft carriers aren't stationary targets. They're not going to just stand there and let you hit them. They've got time to move, not to mention formidable defenses and electronic countermeasures. Not only that, aircraft carriers don't operate alone. Y...

Re: Generational Dynamics World View News

Time isn't necessarily on China's side, even if it might appear that way. They're only beginning to realize how badly they've screwed themselves over with their one-child policy, not to mention all the environmental damage. In 1941, Hitler attacked the Soviet Union in part because Germany was as str...
