Re: Generational Dynamics World View News

If Russia was doing half as well as they claimed to be, the conventional fighting would already be over and we'd be talking about an insurgency. Instead, they abandoned their effort to take Kiev and focused all their effort in the east of Ukraine. Much of the territory they currently occupy was take...

Re: Generational Dynamics World View News

If it was necessary, we could transition to a wartime economy, but such a thing would take 3 years to fully mobilize. In the Second World War, we began transitioning in June 1940 after the fall of France and it took until 1943 to fully do so. Back in the 1980s, we had twice the number of combat airc...

Re: Generational Dynamics World View News

The winner in Ukraine is likely to be, barring something like a tactical nuclear strike, whoever runs out of equipment first. Russia's lost about a quarter of their operational vehicles in just under four months. They've got several thousand reserve tanks on paper, but most of them have been rotting...

Re: Generational Dynamics World View News

Putin taking control of his army reminds me of the Czar's actions in the First World War. After disasters on the Eastern front, he took personal command, meaning that he ended up receiving the blame for many of their subsequent disasters, adding pressure to the revolution. He's got to know that shou...

Re: Generational Dynamics World View News

I hear many people stating that Russia is doomed, that they have no hope to win this war. A couple months ago, the assumption was that Ukraine would collapse in a matter of days, as quickly or even faster than the Iraqi army did in 2003. Sure, a Third World War is unthinkable to almost everyone toda...

Re: Generational Dynamics World View News

When it comes to war with China, I expect large parts of Latin America would join them against us. I have a friend in southern Mexico and he tells me the majority of people down there basically consider us the modern equivalent of Nazi Germany. "Yeah, America butchered a million in Afghanistan, a mi...

Re: Generational Dynamics World View News

15,000 soldiers might be a bit high, but even half that is the equivalent of what we lost in Afghanistan and Iraq, and in a single month. However, I do agree with Navigator that this doesn't mean Russia's suddenly going to sue for peace, taking a small piece of territory, like they did in the Winter...

Re: Evolution of nuclear war strategy

Those with smaller numbers of warheads tended to go toward countervalue targeting to deter attack from a stronger power. Britain and France had a lot of their warheads on nuclear submarines and tactical warheads. Given we spend around 35-40 billion on our nuclear arsenal, it makes me wonder how well...

Evolution of nuclear war strategy

Nuclear war has often been treated as: "We push a button, everyone dies", with little changing from 1945-2020, save for the number of warheads, but this isn't even remotely true. In the early days, nuclear weapons were treated as just another weapon of war, back when atomic bombs were still relative...
