Is this just a part of "human nature" or is it a fundamental part of existence? Have you ever watched the interplay among animals? Have you ever watched plants choke one another out for growing space? We are part of existence, so why should we be different? Because we think we are?

I live a few miles from where "Kennewick Man" was discovered.

The location is on the banks of a very large man made lake created by one of the many huge hydro-electric dams built on the Columbia River. The Columbia is the second largest river in the United States based on flow rate. Much larger than the Missouri or the upper Mississippi, and only smaller than the Lower Mississippi river that combines both the flow rates of the Missouri and the Mississippi.

The land is in the middle of three cities, and was taken by the U.S. Corps of Engineers, through eminent domain, when the federal damn was built by the U.S. Corps of Engineers in the 1950s. The Dam, and the Lake, were named after a location below the Damn that was frequented by Indian Tribes, that camped near the Columbia River, below the site of the Dam. The location "Kennewick Man" was found in was up the river 30 miles above the damn.

Long ago the land was leased to the two surrounding cities as a park, paid for, controlled, and operated, solely by the two cities who surround the Corps of Engineers owned land.

The Park location is actually slightly above the man made lake, on a stretch of the Columbia River that transitions from the artificial lake to a long stretch of free flowing river above the lake. Unlike the permanent man made lake there are no dikes, levies, or pumping stations built by the Corps on the shores of the park. The miles long park is known simply as "Columbia Park".

"Kennewick Man" was found on the Kennewick side of the boundary between the city limits of Kennewick, and the city limits of the city of Richland. The boundry of the two cities divides the park into two parts.

The point of this story is that a few weeks after the body was found the Clinton Administration declared dozens of yards, in every direction from where the body was discovered, including out into the river, a burial ground for an Indian tribe located below this very long, 30 mile, man made lake.

The Corps was ordered by the Clinton Administration to protect the site from being desecrated by scientific investigation, and the Corps did so by using heavy lift Army Helicopters to dump hundreds of tons of boulders, and large rocks, on, and around the site. The noise from these huge heavy lift helicopters continued for weeks as they literally crushed the archeological evidence in, and around, this site.

As the Indian tribe they were claiming to protect told the U.S. government at the time, they did not have a burial ground that far up the River, and that area of the Columbia River had been controlled by a large, war like, confederation of other tribes since before the known history of the tribe being "protected".

As noted, it turned out, after the scientists were allowed to study the body, that there was no genetic connection to any of the modern day tribes in the United States or Canada. "Kennewick Man" had lived, and died, before the ancestors of modern day tribes migrated to North America.

None the less. The "Indian Burial Ground", and what ever artifacts in it that were not crushed, remains off limits to archeological research.
