Re: Financial topics

Safety and liquidity of funds: First of all there is a difference between a long run safety of principal and immediate liquidity. Your example for gold is a good example. Giving human history, gold will retain considerable value but in an emergency you may not be able to turn it into paper currency....

Re: 23-Feb-10 News - Is Burma poised for a new civil war?

I'll watch Fox tonight. I just ordered the Generations book from Amazon yesterday; I'll have it tomorrow.

About Civil War: have you discussed the American Civil War? The Missouri Compromise was in 1820 and there were a series of crisises after that with the war starting in 1861, 41 years later.

Re: President Barack Obama

John; I’m having trouble figuring out Obama. Is he a lightweight BSer or a devious plotter? Maybe it’s a little of both. He seems to have little or no input into the health care bills proposed by the House and Senate committees. It’s a repeat of the stimulus bill that he let the democrats in the Hou...

Re: Fox News Channel vs CNN and MSNBC

Your statement: "Boomers never really celebrate other people - just themselves." is right on the mark. The celebration of the WWII-Greatest Generation has always seemed strange. We have been "celebrating" people whom as a whole are dead or senile. (My dad is 80 and yet he was 2 or 3 years too lyoung...

Re: Financial topics

It is ill-advised to cut military hardware spending at this point in time. This is an ANTI-STIMULUS. The U.S. government will end up eliminating military hardware jobs. I’ve been thinking about the Hitler/30’s depression post and didn’t know where to reply. First, a “certain amount” of military spen...

Re: Financial topics

I think that we are still in the denial stage. The analogy that I use for the stock market during these last two years is to a life-threatening illness. Will the market and the economy pull out of this crisis or will our economic system essentially die. We go through ups and downs about how we feel ...

Re: Financial topics

It's possible that they do want a depression. More likely, IMO, is that they think that this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to push through Socialized Medicine, Global Warming taxes etc., and their other socail programs. They are not going to let the depression stop their plans and/or they will use ...

Re: Financial topics

Andrew: I agree that many people have a very poor understanding of our world. Many people believe utterly ridiculous things. Please also admit that you and I don’t truly understand the world either. It’s too complex and unpredictable for anyone to understand. Actually, I think that a bigger problem ...

Re: Financial topics

John: I agree that are dealing with generational forces that can not be stopped. However, people in power do have an impact. At least Paulson (Bush) were trying to stop the collapse. Maybe they were putting bubblegum in the dam but at least they were trying. Obama and Geithner are either incompetent...

Re: Financial topics

Okay, I agree with the idea that these generational/social forces have a very large impact. However, I still believe that the people in power and their policies have a significant impact. Certainly, did Greenspan have to loosen credit as much and as long as he did? He did have some control over thes...
