It seems to me that the war was an ethnic war from the beginning, with nominal religious affiliation serving only as aligning factors for broad coalitions of ethnic militias. The difference here is that the ethnic militias are aligning based on occupational lines (farmer/herder) rather than religious (christian/muslim). This is neither more nor less ethnic than earlier tribal alignments.
