The earlier reports said that the North Koreans had canceled the
Thursday meeting. The updated news report says that they wanted
to "upgrade" the level of the meeting, and that it would
probably be held on Sunday. Later news reports seem to
have confirmed this.

The original statement that "This has blown up in Trump's face" is
silly, and typical of the nonsense that we read about all the time in
the mainstream media.

(LEAD) N. Korea proposes general-level military talks over
repatriation of American troop remains: source
==========================================================

2018/07/12 19:54

(ATTN: CHANGE headline, lead; UPDATES throughout)

SEOUL, July 12 (Yonhap) -- North Korea has reportedly proposed holding
general-level military talks with the United Nations Command (UNC)
over the repatriation of remains of American troops killed during the
1950-53 Korean War, sources here said Thursday.

North Korea asked the UNC Military Armistice Commission for
general-level military talks on Sunday, according to sources, after it
failed to show up at a meeting with the United States. Representatives
of the U.S. and North Korea were expected to have working-level talks
at the inter-Korean border truce village of Panmunjom on Thursday to
hash out the details of the repatriation, but the discussions did not
occur.

With the meeting not taking place, the UNC reportedly made a phone
call and North Koreans responded by saying that they needed to upgrade
the "level" of the talks.

"North Korea apparently wants a U.S. general to appear at the table to
quickly finalize the repatriation issue," the source said. "It is
likely that military generals from the U.S. and North Korea will take
part in the meeting."

The UNC told the U.S. defense ministry about North Korea's proposal
and is waiting for Washington's answer, the source added.

"We have to see the U.S. defense ministry's response, but the UNC
reportedly gave a positive signal to North Korea, so there is a good
chance of the talks taking place on Sunday," the source said.

If realized, they will be the first general-level military talks
between North Korea and the UNC since March 2009.

Earlier Thursday, a diplomatic source here said the U.S. and North
Korea were still in talks to set a date for working-level dialogue
over the repatriation of remains of American troops.

"The U.S. side had had discussions with the North with an aim to hold
the talks as early as July 12, but it appeared that the North was not
ready for the talks," the source told Yonhap News Agency on condition
of anonymity.

"The two sides are currently communicating to determine when to meet.
There appears to be a possibility that the U.S. could make some
announcement soon," he added.

At the June 12 Singapore summit, U.S. President Donald Trump and North
Korean leader Kim Jong-un committed to recovering the remains of
fallen American troops, including the immediate repatriation of those
already identified.

On June 23, the U.S. Forces Korea said that it had moved 100 wooden
"temporary transit cases" to the border to prepare for the remains'
delivery. Separately, it has moved 158 metal coffins to Osan Air Base
in Gyeonggi Province.

Observers said the repatriation, should it materialize, could give a
boost to the Washington-Pyongyang talks on denuclearization.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo failed to make any significant
progress in fleshing out the North's denuclearization process during
his third visit to Pyongyang last week.

Earlier in the day, an official at Seoul's foreign ministry voiced
expectation that the June summit agreement, including the
repatriation, can quickly be enforced so as to achieve the goal of the
complete denuclearization of the peninsula.

Since 1990, the communist state has reportedly returned 629 sets of
remains to the U.S.

While the details are unclear, a failure to meet on the issue wouldn’t bode well for broader negotiations about North Korea’s nuclear program. The discussions about returning Americans soldiers killed almost 70 years ago was perhaps the most tangible outcome from Pompeo’s trip, which analysts expected would at least secure the release of some remains.

North Korea would have to invade in order to achieve conquest of the south. If it succeeded from the North Korean perspective, the Norks could then be free to utilized and loot South Korea, and take South Koreans as slaves. They would free to do this because the war would effectively be over if North Korea somehow conquered the south. More likely however is that the North Korean attack would be repulsed followed by an allied invasion of North Korea.

There won't be any allied invasion of South Korea. If South Korea falls it will be enslaved. The only freedom South Koreans will ever know again is the freedom death can give to the miserable.

If America goes home, we are never coming back. The Euro freaks are about to find that out.

I agree.

Wouldn't it be better to withdraw American soldiers from South Korea? I see things changing overnight, not unraveling over a period of weeks. This war will be a shock attack like the first Korean war in 1950. What if South Korea surrenders? Or even switches sides? Our soldiers could end up prisoners of war along with their families. And considering how freaky and strange the North Koreans are, what fate would await them?

At the very least, withdraw the family members. If war breaks out, I also have doubts about the reliability of the South Koreans. And what are we going to do with the 8000 military dependents living in Korea? It's crazy to have these people there. If war breaks out, US soldiers might refuse to deploy and instead rush home to make sure their families are evacuated.

During the Cold War, Americans in Germany could flee into France or escape into Denmark and be evacuated to the UK. Korea is basically an island. You can't walk or run anywhere. What will Americans do? Swim to Japan?

I don't doubt the abilities of the US army. I doubt the reliability of the leftist South Korean government.

Evacuate our people.
South Korea can't switch sides, because it is one of the sides. Also unlike in 1950, the South Koreans today are armed to the teeth, so the NORKS swarming the 38th would be a massive miscalculation for them. Unlike back then when doing so seemingly would lead to certain victory. Any war will be fought on Korean soil. Getting dependents out would make the mission much easier, however isn't the current mission of US forces Korea essentially to hold and die in place, while demonstrating to the South Koreans that the US commitment to their defense is irrevocable?
A nuclear armed North Korea with an openly allied China will one day hand the South Koreans an ultimatum: Surrender or be destroyed. If a right wing government is in place, they will fight. If a left wing government is in place, the South will surrender. I doubt the North Koreans and Chinese would use conventional forces to attack South Korea. It would be too costly.

I hope the South Koreans fight to the death. If they give in, they will regret ever being born. South Korean men will be killed and South Korean women will wish they had been.

Asian countries are not like European countries. Asian militaries are extremely large and growing more technologically advanced every day. The Asian allies pull their weight.

Asian allies have little leverage with China. China is their market. They sell products to the Chinese. Asian economies are dependent on the Chinese market and even tourism.

I don't know how effective American ground forces would be in a war considering their small numbers, but the American air force and navy are definitely needed and effective against the Chinese threat.
Point well taken. If Trump is playing for time then it still makes sense to do it in a step wise process regardless if that last step is 1,000 troops or 0.
