Or, would you object if some country wanted to call itself "the
Republic of Georgia"?

Oh wait.
The Republic of Georgia is a different story because it is well recognized on all sides that this is a distinct word with a different etymology that happens to read the same. It might be different if Mexico claimed to be the true successor to the Republic of Texas.

What is more concerning to the Greeks than the name itself is the notion by many Slavo-Macedonians claim that Northern Greece is theirs. Similar claims by Mexicans do concern many Americans.

Albania saved all its Jews plus a couple thousand extra during WW2. Albania was the only country to end the war with more Jews than it started with. You don't hear much about that because Albanians are 'muslim' and no one wants to attribute anything good to them. But as grandma said' I only have grandchildren because of the Albanians.'. On another notes, relations between Greece and Albania have improve so much under Styrzia that radical Greek nationalists have been saying since 2014 that they feel 'abandoned' by the leftist government. How the common people feel varies greatly.

It is hard to see from an American perspective. But consider, If Mexico wanted to call itself "the Republic of Texas", would you be hesitant to recognize it by that name?

Thank you, John. Somewhere is a well-traveled packing carton I have yellowed newspapers from the Athens coup led by Brig. Gen. Cozyris. The Greek post-war struggle against communism was child's play compared to Macedonia's constant historical conflicts. I would need a criminal/military time line to sort out the multi-national forces battling in Macedonia during WWII. The Soviet Union's fall seems to still reverberate in whatever you choose to call Macedonia.
Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Albania have all been involved for more time than has Russia. Greece has the ancient claim. However, Greece is wallowing in its own socialism and debt. That adding turbulent Macedonia to its boiling pot over a name change would hardly be helpful. But then I profess to be civilized.
PS
Macedonia cannot be commended for "volunteering" 7,000 Jews to the ovens.

People who think that Europe has become completely civilized, and that
no one hates anyone any more should realize that vitrioloic hatred at
the extreme exists among the Balkan groups -- Macedonians, the Greeks,
the Albanians and the Bulgarians.

Greece is one the world's oldest and most respected cultures. No one college-bound from my highly ranked high school could graduate without taking Grerk and Latin Derivatives.
Words definitions have ever mattered to a Greek, and you will be parsed to your knees in a debate.
The Macedonians are fighting for what they perceive to be their heritage and identity.
John, can you explain why the Greek position is so adamant? Macedonia cannot physically separate. Are governments now separate?
I am going to pull up Macedonia's WWII occupation. Those in Athens, especially the governors, were badly treated.

I can't believe the Greeks have been allowed to keep the Macedonians out of the EU and NATO over a name dispute. That's pettiness on steroids.
