Russia was bankrupt in 1917 and revolution erupted nonetheless. The civil war that followed raged on until 1924, even longer in some parts of the newly formed Soviet Union. Bankruptcy mean nothing to separatists and revolutionaries but, perhaps, opportunity.

This report does not reflect the real picture in contrasting the Franco War with the current resistance
and demand for a referendum by the Catalonian people. Franco was a brutal dictator, and he allied
his power with Socialist Germany, who brought in the tanks and heavy artillery to defeat the Andelusians.
(Recall movie For Whom the Bell Tolls, and Guernica) Also, many Russians who escaped the Bolsheviks
came to defend the Andelusians. We do not see any of these elements now, and Spain is also bankrupt.

Even if there is no war this time and the separatists are put down with little violence, this wont last. Don't forget that Spain is in a generational Crisis Era and that the last crisis was a civil war.

I expect that the separatists will even more angry if their cause is suppressed again. Although it is no likely to happen this time around, I don't see how this cycle can end without a civil war.

That would be enough to provoke protests and perhaps even violence,
but not enough to cause a civil war.

What happens if the Catalans do declare independence? Military occupation?
If Russia "helped" Catalonia, it would be war with the entire European Union.

You might be right, but it wouldn't be the first time that Al-Quaida linked groups "offer their help" to independence seeking people - I think.
And then the choice would be difficult for weakened Catalonian independentists.
Thanks anyway for your answer.

My opinion is that ISIS and al-Qaeda don't give a shit about
Catalonia. They're using all their resources to kill other Muslims.
They certainly might pull off a terrorist attack or two (in fact,
there was a terrorist attack in Barcelona last month), but I don't
think that would lead to a civil war -- in fact, it would probably
unify the opposing sides in Catalonia to fight the terrorists.

You forget to mention help or assistance that was offered from djihadist groups in the past, towards Catalonia independence.
That might be a really dangerous path for both sides.
