The current situation in Deir az-Zour is temporary, and does not
affect the deep-seated long range generational trends.

Although the situation is a confrontation between the US and Iran, the
actual people fighting on the ground are Syrian, Iraqi, Iranian and
Lebanese Sunnis and Shias. In combination with the Qatar crisis, it's
possible that some incident will trigger a "bad situation that goes
parabolic." If that happens, then I would expect the alignments in
the weeks that follow to trend in the direction predicted by
Generational Dynamics.

There are both religious and ethnic fault lines. The most obvious
ethnic fault line is between the Kurds and the Turks, all of them
Sunni Muslims. The Arab-Qatar split signals another major fault line
within the Sunni Muslims, one whose significance has not yet become
clear.

Considering that the US seems to have thrown its support behind Sunni Saudi Arabia, wouldn't a clash between the US and Iran derail your projections for the coming war? The unprecedented attack on the Iranian parliament and tomb will definitely provoke a brutal Iranian response. I can't believe how quickly this is escalating. Qatar is under siege by the Saudis?! A bad situation has gone parabolic overnight.

Could this mean some Sunnis fight against other Sunnis and some are allied with the Shia? Saudi Arabia and the US versus Qatar, Iran, and Russia?
