One more difference I can think of is if an aggressor faces the fact that their rivals are growing assertive... in an awakening/unraveling era, they're more likely to back down. In a Crisis Era, it'll just provoke them into starting a war.

I've heard a lot of comparisons between what Reagan did in the 1980's and what we should be doing now, overlooking the fact that we're in different eras. I'd like to believe we're making some preparations, at least, but a military buildup isn't likely to have the same effect on China as it did in the Soviet Union 35 years old.

Speaking of which... the Collapse of the Soviet Union to me has always looked a lot more like an awakening era climax than it does a crisis-era resolution.

Appeasing an aggressor can work if the aggressor is not in a
generational Crisis era, but only stimulates nationalism and more
aggression during a Crisis era.

So, Japan moving to a posture of collective self-defense will INCREASE China & N. Korea's nationalism? That begs the question as to when in history has placating an aggressor EVER been seen by the aggressor... as anything other than an invitation to increase aggression? Appeasement never works, bullies only respect strength and a resolve willing to pay whatever price is necessary to confront aggression.
