John,

You should point out that Kissinger is only half-right when he says that Ukraine was part of Russia for over 300 years, and the other half is the crucial point that explains the crisis. If left out, the situation cannot be understood.

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Ukraine :
After the Partitions of Poland (1772–1795) and conquest of Crimean Khanate, Ukraine was divided between Russia and Austria, thus the largest part of Ukraine was integrated into the Russian Empire, with the rest under Austrian (known as Austro-Hungarian since 1849) control.
Those who were part of the Austrian Habsburg empire want out, they see themselves as and are culturally Europeans and their home is the EU. The others want to be in or close to Russia. That's the conflict that we are seeing here.

The Ukrainian language is very, very close to Polish. so close that you can easily have a conversation directly. The Eastern Ukrainians speak Russian after so many years of domination or are immigrated ethnic Russians, and Russian quite different from the Ukrainian languages.

Kissinger says that lying about the soldiers is cynical, but it's a good sign, because it provides a way for Russia to back down. Russia's president Vladimir Putin is going to suffer a major loss of prestige over the Ukraine crisis, no matter how it turns out, according to Kissinger, and Putin knows this. So far, Putin has done what he was forced to do. But now, since he's said that there are no Russian soldiers in Crimea, he doesn't have to issue a public order for the Russian soldiers to evacuate. Instead, he can just allow them to melt into the population. Although Putin will suffer some loss of prestige from this outcome, it's not as bad as other scenarios, according to Kissinger.
Isn't Russia in an Awakening period? If so, isn't this their Vietnam? Is the Ukraine in the same place in the Saecular cycle? Or is it in the same place as Western Europe & the US? That's critical to predicting what will happen. It looks to me like both Russia & Ukraine are both in a cultural awakening. So the violence will be minimal.
