So you're saying, the People are ultimately responsible for the crooked deals, misdeeds and incompetence of government?

Well there's an interesting twist on reality.

We have relative paupers enter the Senate and emerge years later as millionaires, so what are the odds of them sharing their accumulation of wealth while a "public servant" with the People? Government debt works the same way in my book.

Its all theirs.

And another thing (while I'm on this personal responsibility thingy) what's up with a fucking newspaper publishing the names and addresses of LEGAL gun owners?

Well...whats good for the goose is good for the gander:

Personally, I think that 310 million figure is too low, but that's me..

What the answer is for the US problems of gun violence, I don't know. I do know that people are wanting security now, and they'll insist that government do something, effective or not. The issue with armed guards is simple enough, who pays? School budgets are already strained to the limit, so who bells that particular cat?

And there's another thing too, how effective is an armed guard against a surprise attack? And the best I can do for that is to say, not very effective, given experience in Iraq and entirely too many people I've spoken with who were in groups that got shot up, all well armed and waiting for trouble. The same seems to hold in the US as well, given stories like this one hit the news every few days:

http://news.yahoo.com/three-jersey-poli ... 30961.html

Besides which, there's two issues here that get much discussion and fall apart whenever there's a mass shooting. The first is just how much we are willing to pay for security. The number of armed guards and police in the US is getting to be astronomical. Just how much of the GDP can go to security before it all collapses? By security I don't mean the separate figures you see such as "homeland security" or FBI or military spending and so forth. The total is everything from private security guards to prisons to military to the Treasury and DC cops to state police to the local sheriff to federal marshals to bag checkers at the airport and the guy at the gate for large businesses and ten thouand other items. There's so much of it that getting a total figure is nearly impossible. A LOT of spending claimed to be other things breaks down to have a security element included.

And that brings us to the second issue. Just how much of a police state are you willing to live in? When an armed guard is watching over you every minute of the day, just how much freedom do you really have? Maybe I'm oversensitive to this because that's how I've lived for the last few years, but it does get old, even if you like the individual people doing the watching.

I think it would take actually killing someone for some to come to their senses and even then, they might still say: "He deserved what he got."

Bravo!!!

The Martin Niemoller, Nuremberg quote does not get cited often enough. Those who seek to put into effect the institutional mechanism for the use force to mute dissent are always surprised when they become the object of that repression and execution.

Robespierre both started and ended the French Revolution's Reign of Terror, as its final execution. Robespierre, as he who started the river of French blood flowing, he is one of history's most notable examples of those who used force to silence dissent being eaten by the force they put into effect - and for benefit of the Left, always remember Leon Trotsky, and those "wonderful" purges of Stalin; purges that almost cost Russia the Second World War. But, of course, those who would repress others always believe that the mechanism of force, and the resulting executions are: "for those we don't like, not for me." - let those without enemies raise their hand.

Can't cite Rev Niemoller's quote often enough as, initially, he was a staunch advocate of the Nazis - needless to say by the time the Nuremberg trials rolled around, after years of incarceration in the concentration camps his enthusiasm was somewhat more muted. The founders understood the problem quite clearly, thus the First Amendment to the Constitution. If you permit them to get anybody, they will eventually come for you!!!!!
