One could imagine a conspiracy in which the fanatic Muslims and fanatic Christians and fanatic Jews meet and agree to insult each other in order to cause more people to stand with them and swell their respective ranks. Of course, that didn't happen, but effectively they've all agreed to act as if there was in fact such an agreement. It brings them fame and attention and hardens society, so they see no downside until the bombs start falling.
