China - Middle Class Wants to Get Out of Dodge

by Reality Check » Fri Sep 21, 2012 6:07 pm

Thomas L. Friedman, has been going to China every year since 1991.

On Wednesday, September 19th, Friedman appeared on Charlie Rose.

Charlie Rose occasionally allows his guests to just talk with out interruption.

When people are just allowed to talk without limits or direction they often tell the truth without much filtering.

Mr. Friedman shared observations and discussions that did not fit the world view of the New York Times or the Charlie Rose show.

The people Friedman knows from his 20 years of trips to China. China's newly rich and upper middle class "want to get out of Dodge". They want to take their money, acquired legally or illegally, take their children, and leave.

When ask why Friedman said he did not know, but speculated it was fear the economy in China was not sustainable, and fear of what might happen after the leadership change this fall.

Friedman is the first interview on Wednesday's show. But the following Hulu video of the entire show requires you wait through a blank screen while the commercials would have been played ( if your computer is configured the same as mine ) or wait through the commercials if you do not have an ad blocker, before you can actually see the episode.

Friedman writes a much more filtered version of what he observed over the last couple of weeks in China here:
